If you try to open a file, but OS X El Capitan can’t find a program to open that file, OS X prompts you with an alert window. The figure shows what happens when you try to open a very old (1993) file created on a long-defunct Psion Series 3 handheld PDA (a file so old that most of you have probably never seen the.wrd file extension). Try resetting the Mac App Store. Enable the debug menu and restart the Mac App Store. Defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true Choose the Reset Application option and restart the Mac. Navigate to the location where you want the files to be stored. Click the Select button. Click the Close button to exit Preferences. To download a specific image that appears on a web page, move your pointer over the image, right-click, and choose Save Image As from the pop-up menu that appears.
Download music, PDFs, software, and other items by clicking links on webpages.
Important: If a download contains software, an alert appears when you open the item. To be safe, don’t open it if you weren’t expecting a software program or if it’s not from a trusted source.
Download an item
In the Safari app on your Mac, click anything identified as a download link, or Control-click an image or other object on the page.
Choose Download Linked File. (Some webpage items can’t be downloaded.)
Safari decompresses files such as .zip files after it downloads them.
Note: If you download an item that you previously downloaded, Safari removes the older duplicate so it doesn’t take up space on your Mac. See Optimize storage space on your Mac.

See items you downloaded
In the Safari app on your Mac, click the Show Downloads button near the top-right corner of the Safari window.
The button isn’t shown if the downloads list is empty.
Do any of the following:
Pause a download: Click the Stop button to the right of the filename in the downloads list. To resume, click the Resume button .

Find a downloaded item on your Mac: Click the magnifying glass next to the filename in the downloads list. If you move a file or change the download location after downloading it, Safari can’t find the file.
Tip: To change where downloaded items are saved on your Mac, choose Safari > Preferences, click General, then click the “File download location” pop-up menu and choose a location.
Clear the downloads list: In the downloads list, click Clear. To remove one item, Control-click it, then choose Remove From List.
By default, Safari automatically removes an item after one day. To change when items are automatically removed, choose Safari > Preferences, click General, then click the “Remove download list items” pop-up menu and choose an option.
An installation error occurs sometimes for when upgrading from OS X Snow Leopard to OS X Lion “Can’t download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X” – Check your network configuration as the install needs to pull down software over the internet.
But the network configuration is OK.!
Check that Software Update can connect directly to Apple Software Update Servers not a custom internal one, remove any Managed Preferences if it is a managed host.
Option 1
If that still doesn’t get rid of the message I have found on a device that the drive needed to be reformatted – the only thing different about the drive I was trying to install to was that it had a Boot Camp partition on it The Boot Camp partition might be a red herring but certainly reformatting the disk solved the issue.
So:

- clone the main HD drive to an external disk use CCC – link below
- boot from the external
- erase/reformat the main HD – use HFS Extended Journaled
- clone back the main HD from the external
- reboot from the main drive
- run the installation upgrade again
This time – no problems.
If you don’t care whats on the disk just erase it and run the upgrade, I wanted to keep all the data intact in my example, hence the clone back.

Option 2
Why Can't I Download Things On My Mac
Another potential solution is to remove any RAM over 4GB run the install and then put the additional RAM back in after – even then try and limit the RAM slots to one, so not 2GB in each – rather 1 slot with 4GB.
